What kinds of placement topics can I exclude?

Print
The new AdWords interface doesn't fully support the site and category exclusion tool. If you exclude a category, it will work, but you won't be able to see it in your "Excluded placements" table in the new interface. You can only view individual placement exclusions in the new interface. You can manage excluded categories in the previous interface.

We realize that all AdWords users have different preferences, and that some advertisers may want to avoid webpages potentially considered sensitive or mature. By offering topic exclusion, we seek to give advertisers increased control over where their ads appear. Due to the quickly changing nature of the content network, we're unable to give you a list of pages in each topic available for exclusion in the Site and Category Exclusion Tool. However, we've included common examples of content that might be included below.

All pages in the content network are required to comply with Google's AdSense policies, which bar pornography, profanity, hate content, and other subjects. Several levels of automated and manual review are in place to help ensure that the pages in the content network don't violate these policies. The topics listed below attempt to cover subject matter not encompassed by our guidelines, but that could still be considered sensitive to some audiences.

Conflict & tragedy
Crime, police & emergency: Police blotters, news stories on fires, and emergency services resources
Death & tragedy: Obituaries, bereavement services, accounts of natural disasters, and accidents
Military & international Conflict: News about war, terrorism, and sensitive international relations

Edgy content
Juvenile, gross & bizarre Content: Jokes, weird pictures, and videos of stunts
Profanity & rough language: Moderate use of profane language
Sexually suggestive content: Provocative pictures and text

Two important notes on topic exclusion:
  • While webpages are categorized under these topics to the best of our technology's ability, excluding a topic does not guarantee that you have excluded every related webpage. If you see that your ad has shown on an undesired webpage, please exclude that page manually or by using the Sites tab of the Exclusion tool.
  • The topic exclusion is only supported in the following languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish. Please don't use this tab if your campaign targets an unsupported language.

Before excluding a topic, it's important to consider the following:

  • Excluding a topic can significantly reduce traffic to your campaign. You can see how much traffic your ads have received on pages in these topics by viewing the table in the Topics tab.
  • Our system may identify several topics on a single page. By excluding a sensitive topic, you may exclude webpages that contain material relevant to your product or service.
  • The Topics tab supports the following languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish. Please don't use this tab if your campaign targets an unsupported language. Learn more.
