About the discontinuation of Google Print Ads

Print
Important news about Google Print Ads: On January 20, we announced that Google will discontinue the Print Ads feature. All print ads will stop running on March 31.

At Google, it's important to us to create effective tools that continually serve our advertisers, publishers, and users. In reviewing the Print Ads product, it has became clear that this feature isn't having the kind of impact that we or our partners have come to expect. Because of this, we will no longer be supporting print ads after March 31, 2009. See the announcement.

To those of you who have participated in Google Print Ads, we greatly value your support and the business goals you were pursuing. We'll continue to work hard on providing advertisers with an array of ad platforms to use to connect with millions of people. We look forward to working with you in the future.

The details

You may continue using the system to book ads through March 31. All ads scheduled before March 31 will run as accepted by publishers unless you decide to cancel them (note that the standard Print Ads cancellation deadlines apply). You'll continue to be able to communicate with publishers, review tearsheets, and make changes to existing campaigns until March 31.

However, in order to prepare for the termination of the Print Ads system, there will be a few changes. Here are the details:

  • February 26
Last day to create new print campaigns or add additional newspapers to existing campaigns. After this date, you'll be able to change the dates of existing accepted offers or cancel them (standard Print Ads cancellation deadlines apply).

  • March 31
Last day we'll run newspaper ads. All ads scheduled to run after March 31 will be canceled and you'll receive an email notification. We suggest you download your Print Ads creatives or data from draft campaigns before March 31 as they won't be available after then.

After March 31, the system will continue to be available in a limited way. You'll be able to access reports and tearsheets, but not the full Print Ads system. You should take the time now to download information from the 'Reports' page of your account. If you're interested, we can connect you to representatives from newspapers in the Google network to work with you on campaigns after April 1.

  • April 30
Last day to access reports and tearsheets. The system will be inaccessible after April 30.

Support

Google representatives will continue to be available to help you with Print Ads or AdWords questions. As usual, you can reach the support team through our contact form. Our highest priority is to continue to provide you with world-class service. We will do everything possible to ensure this transition is smooth for you over the next few months.

FAQs

Why is Google doing this now?
We made this decision after evaluating the number of advertisers benefiting from Print Ads and their satisfaction with our product. We are telling you this news now so you have several months advance notice before the system closes.

When will these changes take place?
The last day ads will run through Google Print Ads is March 31, 2009. Reports and campaign data will be available until April 30, 2009.

How will this change affect the campaigns I'm currently running or have booked in the system?
We'll run all newspaper adds booked through March 31. If you have campaigns booked to run after this date, we'll cancel them for you and send you an email alert in the next couple weeks. Please feel free to transition any campaigns you have booked past March 31 to the publisher directly. We can help put you in touch with the right people at the newspaper.

Can I still book new campaigns?
No, February 26 was the last day to create new print campaigns.

Can I still access Print Ads using my AdWords account?
Print Ads will continue to be available in your AdWords account until March 31. After this time, you'll only be able to view your print ad reports and tearsheets. The last day to access those reports will be April 30, so we suggest you download any reports you'd like to keep. Also, if you'd like to keep records of your campaign data (such as copies of your ad creatives or publication details), please run the reports as soon as possible while the system is still fully operational.

If I want to continue to run print advertising, should I go directly to the publishers?
Yes. If you'd like to set up a newspaper campaign to run beyond March 31, we recommend you contact the newspaper directly.

Where can I learn more information about this?
See this blog post about Print Ads today at the Google Traditional Media Blog. Should you have questions about your account, please contact us.

Does this mean you aren't working with newspapers anymore?
No, while Print ADs will not be available any longer, Google works with newspaper publishers on other products like AdSense, DoubleClick, Google News, and more.

Does this mean you'll be discontinuing other ad products?
No, this change does not affect the other products that we offer.
